The first lawsuit was filed against the billion dollar drug Xarelto in mid of 2014. Plaintiff filed cases after severe internal bleeding were sent to them at the hospital. When those cases were examined it was found that patients took Xarelto (rivaroxaban) and their claims hold responsible excessive bleeding on the use of Xarelto. It is evident that Xarelto doesn’t have an antidote to stop bleeding which could be fatal.
In May’2014 Boehringer Ingelheim paid $650 million to settle thousands of Drug effects cases which were involving its blood thinner, Pradaxa. It was launched in market in 2010, a year prior to Xarelto and both the drugs have almost the same side effects.
“As the manufacturers and distributors of Xarelto, defendants knew or should have known that Xarelto use was associated with irreversible bleeds,” Stunteneck’s complaint said
Since then the number of complaints are increasing against the manufacturer of Xarelto Bayer and Johnson & Johnson. As of today, there were 5,200 cases pending in federal court in the Eastern District of Louisiana before Judge Eldon E. Fallon. Plaintiffs claim a number of side effects were caused by Xarelto, which includes strokes, blood clots and excessive bleeding.
“I expect to see an increase in filings over the next month or two given the media attention caused by The New York Times’ recent report, but on the whole this is now a stable mass tort that is reasonably well known,” Philadelphia attorney Max Kennerly told Forbes.
